Movie / Music License:
The
CVLI - Christian Video Licensing International is a branch of
Motion Picture Licensing Corporation and directly related to
CCLI. CCLI is the company started by a former local church music
director in Oregon that for 20 years has made it easy and
financially reasonable to use copyrighted music in churches.
CVLI does much the same thing with movies, including productions
from a lot of the Hollywood studios. It is against copyright law
to use movies in most situations in churches because it is
considered public performance. If you are using movie clips in
worship services or showing full length movies to youth groups
or other groups, the better part of wisdom, not to say anything
about ethical responsibility, says you should get an annual CVLI
license. The cost is very reasonable and is a sliding scale
based on the size of your congregation. My church has had both
a CCLI and CVLI license for three plus years – ever since we
began a weekly casual worship service where we are projecting
movies and hymn lyrics on a screen. You can find out more about
CCLI at
www.ccli.com. To get info about CVLI go to
